Harvest Monday

My Harvest Monday postings are going to be a lot of the same for as long as they continue, which may not be much longer, with the weather changing into colder temperatures. I have basically three crops left: kale, brussels sprouts and carrots.
 I forgot to take a photo of the carrots I pulled. Oh, and I did get a little parsley as well. That's about it, but I'm not complaining. It's wonderful to still be getting some fresh vegetables from the garden a week into November.
I planted a good sized bed of mache, but sadly only a few of the many seeds I spread sprouted and those that did are quite small. Not even worth covering the bed with any kind of protection. I have a small bed of spinach going as well, but after harvesting many of the small leaves last week I covered it with straw to overwinter. I seem to have a lot more success with overwintered spinach than I do with new spring plantings, so I'm looking forward to seeing that spinach again next year early in the spring.

  1. I love homegrown Brussels Sprouts! I haven't grown them the last couple of years. I always seem to have trouble getting my mache to germinate. Sometimes it takes forever, but finally comes up.

  2. Thanks for the comment Dave! I was wondering if I did something wrong regarding the mache. Last year it did slightly better. I grew the brussels sprouts for my husband as they are probably his favorite vegetable!

  3. My Brussels sprouts did nothing for me this year, just a few tiny ones, one gardener recommended pinching the top around August, going to try that next year.

    1. That is what I did Norma! I read in one of my gardening books to do that and it worked. Before that the sprouts were the size of small peas.

  4. Your spouts look wonderful. I've yet to successfully grow them. Some year it will happen. Or at least I keep telling myself that. I had trouble getting mache up when I've tried it before. This is the first season I had more than a few plants. But I dumped a lot of seed on the ground (that was old and I thought wouldn't germinate). I forgot about it and a month later it germinated. It takes forever. I keep wondering if I should have a little nursery area for them that I seed heavily. Then transplant them later.

    1. Thanks! It sure takes the sprouts forever! Those plants were sown in early spring and I did have to pinch the tops off in August to finally get the sprouts to size up. I'll have to keep watch on the mache to see if I get any more.

    2. love those sprouts! don't give up on the mache; it really likes it cold and the snow may melt in spring to surprise you with a lovely bed of it! last year mine didn't even sprout good until after a good snow in Dec.

Alot of us will be showing pretty much the same thing week after week from here on out, but it is still nice to be getting fresh harvests to supplement our frozen and stored items etc. Your sprouts look delicious. I have skipped growing them for a couple years now but am missing them enormously. I think I need to make room for them in the 2013 garden.

    1. That's the truth, the sprouts take up a good chunk of space and use it all spring, summer and fall long! Until this year I really didn't have the space to devote to them.

    1. Yes, it really is great to have fresh veg to harvest so late in the year! Makes me want to keep pushing the envelope every year!

  7. Memories of childhood & overcooked sprouts has kept me from growing them, as with most veggies I suppose fresh home grown ones taste great? Good luck with your overwintering !

    1. Thank you Andrea! And thanks for stopping by! Yes, homegrown sprouts are much better, though they still have that distinct brussels sprouty taste that some people don't like.

  8. Nice Kale you have. I wish I would have planted more of it now. We don't use sprouts and I pulled the last of the carrots today. Think we are all in the same boat and can't wait till spring! Nancy

    1. Yes Nancy, dreams of spring are starting already! I find myself waiting for the new seed catalogues to come and making plans for what I'll do differently.

  9. Great looking Brussels Sprouts! We haven't had much success with them, so am envious whenever I see someone else who has!
